Why do I need a Construction Permit? A construction permit represents legal permission to begin a construction project. The issuance of a permit indicates that plans for a project have been approved by Borough of Dumont officials and have complied with the Uniform Construction Code and Township Zoning Ordinance.
Do I need licensed contractors? In New Jersey, homeowners of single family, owner occupied, and dwelling are permitted to perform their own work if they possess the knowledge of the regulations and the skill and physical ability to perform the work. More information on HIC license provisions can be obtained from the Department of Consumer Affairs website at http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/contractors. In all case of commercial or two family homes, the State of New Jersey requires contractors to be licensed to insure that they possess basic knowledge to perform the work and required insurance coverage. All contractors performing electrical, plumbing, fire alarm and sprinkler work must be licensed in those particular fields.
How long does it take for a Construction Application take to be reviewed? The Building Department is allowed 20 business days. If the application has been denied, the applicant may resubmit drawing which will allow the Building Department 7 days to approve or deny.
When you have completed the application, please drop off at 50 Washington Avenue, between 8am-4:30pm – no appointment necessary.
